Mantua
This ketubah is based on an Italian design from the city of Mantua, Italy in the
year 1824. It was common for the text of the ketubah to have a rectangular contour which was quietly
ornamented. The chief ornaments here are posies of flowers. The top of the text is decorated with
ribbons surrounding a shield which typically quoted phrases from the Bible. In this modern adaptation,
the shield surrounds the commonly used expression of Chai. This ketubah uses the symmetrical
undulating lines of the vines that was so common in nineteenth century Italy.
